VIDEO CLIP OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM 'OH BABY'
Next week, I will be posting my annual Top 50 Albums Of The Year list and, as is traditional, it's time to take a little look back at last year's champions and see what they've been up to. The first half of 2018 was pretty hectic for James Murphy and his LCD Soundsystem crew as they toured solidly in support of the mighty 'American Dream' album. There were massive gigs for them all around the globe and - over here - a huge all-dayer in East London's Victoria Park supported by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix and many others. There's still no word on any new music that might be forthcoming but, as a farewell to the whole 'American Dream' promotional treadmill, a video for it's opening track was released in the autumn and promptly blew my mind. Directed by Looper and The Last Jedi helmsman Rian Johnson, this 6 minute clip for the stupendous Oh Baby is about as good as videos get. Starring Hollywood royalty in Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn, this mini-film sees the couple invent a teleportation device that will undoubtedly change the world. Unfortunately, things don't go according to plan. Spacek and Strathairn are utterly riveting in this and if Oscars were handed out to music videos, then this would sweep the board. It left me speechless on first viewing and it touches me more than most full-blown movies do. It is, quite simply, a masterpiece.
